What are my rights if the property I rent changes ownership?

A change of ownership does not by itself end your tenancy: the new owner generally takes over the existing landlord’s rights and responsibilities, including the tenancy agreement and deposit arrangements. You should receive the new landlord’s contact and payment details, and should not normally be asked for a second deposit solely because the property was sold. If the new owner wants you to leave, they must follow the applicable legal notice rules and cannot simply evict you because ownership has changed. Check any notice carefully and contact the RTB or a solicitor if you are unsure about its validity; the outcome of a dispute depends on the facts of your tenancy.
