What are my rights if the property I rent changes ownership?

A RentWise Team Answered by

A change of ownership does not automatically end your tenancy, and the new owner generally takes over the existing landlord’s rights and responsibilities. Your rent, lease terms and other tenancy conditions should continue, including during a fixed-term agreement unless a lawful termination applies. The new landlord should provide written contact and payment details, and the deposit should be properly transferred or accounted for. If the property is being sold and vacant possession is required, the landlord must follow the statutory termination grounds, notice periods and any required paperwork; disputes can ultimately be assessed through the RTB process.
