If you fall into rent arrears, contact your landlord promptly and propose a realistic payment plan in writing, setting out the arrears, instalments and dates. Your landlord does not have to accept the proposal, and agreeing a plan does not automatically prevent further action if payments are missed. They must still follow the legal process for rent arrears and cannot simply change the locks or remove you without following the required notice and termination rules. Keep records of payments and messages, and contact the RTB or a housing advice service for guidance; any dispute will ultimately depend on the facts and the RTB process.
