Before moving in, read the tenancy agreement carefully and confirm the rent, deposit, notice terms, payment details and who is responsible for bills and repairs. Photograph or video every room, fixture and appliance, including any existing damage, and send the dated record to the landlord or agent; also record meter readings and take the keys only after checking locks, heating, plumbing, smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms. Keep receipts for the deposit and first rent payment, and save the landlord’s or agent’s contact details.
