Can my landlord increase the rent because they have made improvements to the property?

A RentWise Team Answered by

Improvements do not automatically allow a landlord to increase the rent. In a Rent Pressure Zone, an increase may be permitted where there has been a substantial change in the nature of the accommodation, such as a significant extension or conversion, rather than routine repairs, decorating or replacing appliances. The landlord must still follow the applicable rent-setting rules and serve a valid rent review notice. If you believe the increase is unlawful, you can seek information from the RTB; any dispute will ultimately be decided under its dispute resolution process.
