A Reader Is my rental deposit automatically lodged with the RTB when my tenancy is registered?

A RentWise Team Answered by

RentWise Team: No. Registering a tenancy with the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) does not automatically lodge or protect the deposit, as the RTB is not generally a deposit-holding service. The landlord or letting agent usually receives the deposit and should return it at the end of the tenancy, subject to any lawful deductions. If there is a disagreement about deductions or repayment, either party can use the RTB’s dispute resolution process, whose outcome depends on the facts and evidence.
