In Galway, as elsewhere in Ireland, a landlord must usually give a written notice of termination and the notice period depends on how long the tenancy has lasted: 90 days for under six months, rising to 224 days for a tenancy lasting more than eight years. After the first six months, the landlord generally needs a legally permitted reason, such as rent arrears, sale, or the landlord moving in, and extra requirements may apply. A copy of the notice must be sent to the RTB on the same day as it is given to the tenant, or it may be invalid.
