Is there a deposit protection scheme in Ireland and how is my rental deposit safeguarded?

A RentWise Team Answered by

Ireland does not currently have a national statutory deposit protection scheme like those operating in some parts of the UK. The landlord or letting agent generally holds the deposit during the tenancy and should return it promptly after the tenancy ends, unless a lawful deduction is justified, such as unpaid rent or damage beyond normal wear and tear. Ask for a receipt, keep records of the property’s condition, and request written details and evidence for any proposed deduction. If you cannot agree, the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) may deal with the dispute, based on the facts of the individual tenancy.
