What deposit protection scheme deadlines apply to Irish rentals and when should my deposit be returned?

A RentWise Team Answered by

Ireland does not currently operate a statutory deposit protection scheme, so there is no deadline for a landlord to lodge a deposit with one. There is also no fixed statutory deadline for returning the deposit, but it should generally be returned promptly after the tenancy ends, subject to legitimate deductions such as rent arrears or damage beyond normal wear and tear. Ask for an itemised explanation and supporting evidence for any deduction. If you cannot resolve the issue, an RTB dispute application should normally be made within six months of the dispute arising; check the RTB’s current guidance for possible extensions.
