There is currently no Kildare-specific or national deposit protection scheme in Ireland, so a landlord generally holds the deposit during the tenancy. The deposit should be returned promptly when the tenancy ends, unless a lawful deduction is needed for rent arrears, unpaid bills or damage beyond normal wear and tear. For tenancies covered by the current rules, a landlord cannot usually ask for more than one month’s rent as a deposit. Keep payment records, photographs and written communications, and seek resolution through the RTB if you cannot agree; the outcome depends on the facts of the individual case.
