Galway follows Ireland’s national tenancy rules, and there is currently no separate statutory deposit protection scheme requiring landlords to lodge deposits with a government provider. A deposit is generally limited to one month’s rent for newer tenancies, and the landlord should return it promptly after the tenancy, subject to reasonable deductions supported by evidence. Ask for a receipt and keep photographs, inspection records and correspondence about the property’s condition. If you disagree about deductions or the deposit is not returned, the RTB can deal with the dispute, with the outcome depending on the tenancy’s individual facts.
