Is there deposit protection for student accommodation in Ireland and what can I do if my deposit is withheld?

A RentWise Team Answered by

Ireland does not currently have a separate statutory deposit-protection scheme for student accommodation. A landlord or provider should explain how the deposit is held and return it after the tenancy, less any lawful deductions supported by the tenancy terms and evidence. If your accommodation is covered by residential tenancy law, you may be able to bring a deposit dispute to the RTB, although eligibility can differ for licences, digs or some campus arrangements. Keep the agreement, payment records, inventory, photographs and correspondence, and check the RTB website or seek legal advice if needed.
